versatile bridesmaid dresses with flair

Monica Zibutis, a fabulous photographer in our area, recently posted the wedding of Beth & Joel, and while there were a lot of things to love about this beautiful wedding, the thing that really grabbed me were the bridesmaids dresses! I, like many people, have been told each and every time I donned a bridesmaid dress, “Oh, you can definitely wear it again!” And I really don’t think anyone was intentionally lying to me—I’ve worn some beautiful ‘maids dresses, but I have never, not even once, worn any of them again. There is just always something about the formality, the material, the heaviness or the color—I’m a pretty big believer in the bridesmaid dress being a one-time-use kind of outfit, and why not, it’s your wedding day! It’s worth a $200 one-time dress! But when I saw these dresses I immediately thought, “that would be such a cute New Years Eve outfit!”

I could also see wearing it to  a Christmas party or other holiday—it’s beautiful, and the shiny silver polka dots add an extra sparkle that would not lead anyone to think you’re wearing a bridesmaids dress. Love it. So if you’re still searching for the perfect bridesmaid dresses and you would like your girls to get to wear them again, consider looking at cocktail dresses and other non-bridal selections—you could save your ‘maids money and get them a two-time outfit!

southwest michigan wedding venue on the beach::shadowland ballroom & carousel

Yesterday I had the pleasure of taking a guided tour of the new Shadowland Ballroom on Silver Beach in St. Joseph. The new facility will open on December 31st, and has been highly anticipated! The building is not yet open to the public, so I was excited to get some pictures to share with brides who may be looking for a gorgeous wedding venue along the lake shore.

First, a quick note on the location—it’s amazing! The new Shadowland building houses Shadowland Ballroom, an annex to the Curious Kids Museum and the full-size, working reproduction of the historic  Silver Beach carousel and is located below the bluff, about 500 feet from Lake Michigan itself. One section of the ballroom, the Sunset Room and its adjoining outdoor patio, actually has views of the lake! Across the street is the newly opened Compass Fountain Park, which boasts aerial and in-ground fountains that go off on the hour during the spring and summer! Shadowland Ballroom is within walking distance of downtown St. Joseph, and downtown hotels like The Boulevard Inn. So if you’re looking for a wedding on the lake, you can’t get much closer than this in Southwest Michigan! Keeping in mind that I’m not a professional photographer, but try my best, I’ll take you on a little photo tour of Shadowland Ballroom!

A PHOTO TOUR OF SHADOWLAND BALLROOM & CAROUSEL

Below (left) is the main entrance to the building, and the private parking lot will have 80 spots reserved for private events. The building will be lined by dune grass, with a grassy front lawn. Just inside the entrance is an amazing overhead Kaleidoscope that you can actually walk under and look up into. Photos are projected into it from various cameras throughout the building, which means during your event, your big moments and your guests may be captured and displayed in all of their 1,000-faceted glory! This was neat even covered in black tape and without anything projected on it—I cannot wait to see this in action! After entering the building and passing under the kaleidoscope, you walk into a large main corridor called the Boardwalk, which divides the building into the ballroom section on the right, and the carousel and museum on the left. This building is very light, bright and open, with lots of skylights, windows and natural light!shadowland-ballroom-carouselBelow (left) is a view of the ballroom from its entrance—3 sets of large french doors. On the right, the view of the ballroom, facing the entrance. I really like the colors in the room, which are light shades of blue, creams and light greens—it’s very neutral and natural feeling. On the far right, you’ll see just a glimpse of the Sunset room.
shadowland-ballroom-carousel-stjoseph-michiganBelow  right, is another view of the Sunset Room. The Sunset room is attached to the ballroom and connects to an outdoor covered patio area. The Sunset room has a beautiful view of the Compass Fountain park, the lake, and of course, the sunset! As you can see, the ballroom has beautiful light wood floors, and will boast beautiful art-deco style chandeliers, which have yet to be installed. The room has state of the art features including overhead lighting options (you could project your monogram onto the dance floor) and a built-in overhead projector with 2 built-in, drop-down screens.
shadowland-ballroom-southwest-michigan-carousel-silver-beachAcross the hall from Shadowland Ballroom is the million dollar working replica of the original Silver Beach Carousel. This project has been ongoing for years now, and I am so excited to see what is promised to be an amazing piece of artwork! The carousel itself will boast 50 different horses, animals, chariots (and even insects) that guests can ride. The carousel portion of the building is open to the public, but if you’d like to reserve it for your guests, you can purchase private time in 30 minute increments. This private time can be used for pictures or rides for your guests, and also includes 50 carousel tokens that can be used at anytime during your wedding reception, or on another day. The silver tokens are actually beautiful art pieces of their own, and would make wonderful favors or keepsakes! The picture on the right shows the view of the lake from the carousel! See that blue sky? That’s the lake below it! The views from this building are going to be amazing during wedding season!
shadowland-ballroom-carousel-silver-beach-michiganI know there’s nothing fun about bathrooms and dressing rooms, but they’re a must-have if you’ll be needing a spot to get ready on-site. The bathroom is on the right, and will have a beautiful glass-tile back splash lining the long wall of sinks.  Plenty of room for you and your  bridesmaids to line up and check their makeup before heading into your reception! On the left is the bride’s room, which also has its own private bathroom across the hall!

WHO needs a wedding planner::the 5 W’s of wedding planning

I wish I could say that “if you are engaged, you absolutely, positively, MUST hire a wedding planner”…BUT, it just wouldn’t be true.  I also wish I could say that the list below is a definitive guide to determining if you need a wedding planner…but I can’t. What I can do, is let you know that there are many reasons for hiring a wedding planner, and it’s a personal choice for each and every bride.  Here are just a few reasons why you may find yourself in need of a professional wedding planner:

YOU MAY NEED A WEDDING PLANNER IF…

  • You’re planning your wedding from out of state or out of town…
  • You have a demanding job or hectic schedule….
  • You can’t find the perfect venue…
  • You want to make the most of your budget…
  • You are so stressed you cannot enjoy the process of planning your wedding…
  • You don’t know how to get started…
  • You’re planning your wedding in a short time-frame…
  • You’re struggling to define the look and feel of your wedding style…
  • You need a “go-to” person for your wedding day…
  • You are concerned that the planning process will cause family stress…
  • Your wedding is being held at a non-traditional venue or on the beach…
  • You want to plan an incredible event while staying stress free and enjoying your engagement!

If you feel like you could use some help, you don’t have time to plan the wedding you’re dreaming of, or that the planning process is overwhelming you, set up a consultation with a professional wedding planner.  A professional planner will be more than happy to talk through your issues and concerns to determine if planning is right for you, and what level of assistance would be the best fit to ensure your day is fabulous, and you remain a stress-free, beautiful bride on your wedding day!

WHAT does a wedding planner do::the 5 W’s of professional wedding planning

If you’re already planning your Michigan wedding, you already know that there are a lot of fun decisions to be made: the perfect flowers, those beautiful linens, an amazingly delicious cake, just the right song for that special first dance. And you probably also know that there are a lot of “experts” out there that are happy to help you with all of that “fun stuff.” Your cousin who got married last summer and knows the ONLY florist you should go to–which was hers, of course…your sister, who is happy to email you picture after picture of all of her favorite ideas…your future mother in law who is happy to take you to her favorite caterers.  Brides rarely find themselves with no one to offer assistance, but rather, it’s just not the assistance really needed, and it’s overwhelming.

If what you’re looking for is ideas for your wedding, then your friends and family can be a great resource (so are bridal magazines!). But if you’re looking for more, then a professional wedding planner can offer you the kind of assistance that will make planning your wedding enjoyable and manageable!  Your cousin probably had a great florist, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that that florist fits your style or budget or can cater to what you are looking for.  There’s a reason there are a ton of wedding vendors out there, and it’s because every vendor is not a perfect fit for every bride—each one brings their own style, strength, personality and pricing.  A professional wedding planner has connections and working relationships with vendors of all styles and budgets, and can help connect you with the vendors that will get you the most for your money. So while your family members may point you to the florist who is well-known in your area and will do a fantastic job (for a pretty penny), your wedding planner can direct you to a florist who can create what you need within your budget, saving you hundreds, or even thousands of dollars. A professional wedding planner can also take your style into consideration, and isn’t just pointing you in the direction of their favorite things.

When the “fun stuff” is done, your professional wedding planner will be there to figure out the flow of your reception setup, handle the logistics of shuttling your guests from one location to another; put together time lines so your family, bridal party and vendors know where they’re going and when; negotiate with vendors to ensure your orders are correct; troubleshoot any issues that arise; and will, at all times, make decisions that are best for you, and go along with your overall vision for the day.  And those are just a few of the things a wedding planner can handle for you!

Planning vs. Coordination

Day of Coordination
This is for the bride that wants to plan the wedding herself, but would like the assistance of a professional to ensure that everything is executed properly on the day-of, to oversee the vendors, assist with the ceremony and reception flow, trouble shoot any issues that arise and generally, be the go-to person making sure that your wedding day is wonderful and stress-free for the bride & groom and their families!

Full-Service Planning
This is for the bride who wants to sit back and enjoy her engagement, while a professional wedding planner walks her through every step of the planning process.  From finding a venue and matching you with vendors that match your budget and style, to helping create every detail that will make your day shine, a full-service wedding planner is your partner in creating an amazing wedding!

a beautiful summer wedding at millcreek barns in southwest michigan

Earlier this summer we posted a few pictures from the Michigan wedding of Megan+Greg, the first wedding at Mill Creek Barns in Watervliet! I wanted to share some of the amazing professional photos we received from their fantastic photographers, Two Pair Photography, and I hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoyed planning this fun Michigan wedding!

Mill Creek Barns has a beautiful outdoor ceremony area, but a traditional catholic wedding was very important to the couple, so the ceremony was held at St. Bernard’s, and we utilized the outdoor ceremony area for a fun and beautiful cocktail hour, complete with an outdoor bar featuring Michigan beers and wines, delicious passed appetizers by the always-delicious CK Catering, and a lovely iced tea and lemonade bar, complete with mini mason jar glasses.

ceremony collage

MillCreek Barns has so many beautiful details throughout, making it such a unique and lovely venue to host your Southwest Michigan wedding. The grounds, which feature another barn as well, have so many areas to take beautiful photos, you can stay right on the property and still take some fantastic photos!

Each table was named after the location of an “adventure” the couple took, complete with a picture of them—Megan+Greg are quite the adventurers considering there were 20+ tables! The escort cards were planted in tins of grass with a hand-painted sign reading “find your own adventure.”  Check out our post on more creative table numbers we loved this season!

Centerpieces were created by Stella Event Design, using Hydrangea stems, and accented with stock and branches re-purposed from the pew arrangements created for the ceremony. Half of the tables were adorned with the large mason jar and hydrangea centerpieces, while the other half  featured candles made with small mason jars tied with raffia and paper flowers. The wood chargers used as centerpiece bases were purchased from a local artisan and are available to rent from Stella Event Design.

Montage, out of Kalamazoo, rocked the barn and the dance floor was literally packed all night long! Guests came armed with boas, hats, and silly masks to create their own fun on the dance floor—it was an incredibly fun party and celebration of this fun couple!
